The original of this exquisite relief is in the
Temple of Abydos in Egypt. Dating from the 19th Dynasty, 1300 BC, it
shows Pharaoh Seti I, father of Ramses II, offering to the Gods the seated
image of Maat, held in his hand like a doll. The Goddess Maat is the
personification of all the elements of cosmic harmony including truth,
justice, law, world order and moral integrity as established by the
Creator-God at the beginning of time. She is shown as a lady wearing an ostrich
feather on her head. This scene establishes the king as representative of
divine order since Maat legitimizes his authority to govern and to
uphold the laws of the universe which she embodies. This spectacular
relief -- a fragment of a larger piece (#15) on our site -- is every bit as
beautiful as shown -- is made of hydrostone and measures 12" H X 15"W.
