The tomb of Nefertari, from which the original
of this wall fragment comes, is the largest architectural and decorative
enterprise ever dedicated to a Pharoah's wife. Nefertari was the chief
Queen and favorite wife of Ramses II. The name Nefertari means "the
most beautiful of them". Ramses II devoted the minor temple of Abu
Simbel to the Goddess Hathor and dedicated it to Nefertari. There,
identified with the Goddess, Nefertari intensely participated in the
divine
cult. Nefertari gave Ramses four sons and two daughters and died at
the relatively old age of 43. Here we see her in a beautiful white
ceremonial gown receiving the "breath of life", symbolized by the ankh,
from Isis, the Mother Goddess. The hieroglyphical inscription gives the
name of the Queen and her titles.
This beautiful wall relief measures
24.5"
x 11.5". It is finely detailed and the color, although brighter, is
sufficently
subdued to give the look and "feel" of the original. A magnificent large
relief with a sturdy hanger on the back, this piece reads very well.
