Anubis
ANUBIS-->
ANUBIS -- or Anpu, son of Nephthys, sister of Isis, was the jackal
god of the dead. He superintended funerals as well as, with Thoth and
Maat, presided over the ceremony of the Weighing of the Heart. Anubis
led the souls of the dead into the Kingdom of Osiris and possessed the
power to overcome evil forces which might be encountered along the
way. Offerings were made to Anubis to assist the soul to overcome these
forces as it journeyed to the afterlife. In Ancient Egypt the tomb had to
be protected from evil spirits and devils. This was effected by placing
figures of the gods in the mummy chamber of the tomb and by burying
amulets in the four walls -- an amulet of Anubis was placed on a tablet of
incense and put on a brick in the east wall of the tomb. Also, an amulet
which respresented the two fingers of Anubis who assisted Osiris to
climb the ladder to heaven was placed with the mummy to assist the soul
on its journey. This exquisite relief measures 12" x 16.5" wide and is very
well carved -- there is good detail throughout and the piece reads very
well. Hanger on the back.
